Northumberland Street, October 15th 1993. “The Oxford Street of the North”

I just had to blog this, it’s such a contrast between 12 years ago and now. A lot has changed; pedestranisation now rules over the car, road maps are now interactive and mobile telephones are common.

Having said that a lot has remained the same; the character of Newcastle, the popularity of one of the countries busiest shopping streets and the shops are still in their prime locations

More from tedsherarts.

Sorry for the absense in the updates over the past few months, I’ll try and get into adding new photos every 2/3 days and get the website back on track again. I’ll probably upgrade to Wordpress 2 in the next few weeks and get a better theme sorted out.

Central Motorway - Empty

Central Motorway

Central Motorway - Empty submitted and taken by andyproctor.

What is now known as ‘the central motorway’ is a distasterous attempt at redevelopment and regeneration in the 60’s which involoved building a huge motorway through the east side of the city centre of Newcastle.

As a result it has created a very complicated and heavily congested road system and has partially isolated the east end of Newcastle due to the road itself acting as a ‘wall’ of such.

This tiny fragment of urban motorway was originally intended to be one side of a network of similar routes, however the other sections and connecting roads were never built.

The road makes an effective bypass for the city centre, though its junctions are almost terrifying, with entries and exits bombarding the driver from all sides. Some entrances simply can’t be called sliproads - at least one ends at a ‘give way’ line - whilst another route towards the North of Newcastle (when coming from the East) requires the driver to cross 3 lanes of incredibly fast moving traffic in the space of a few hundred yards.

Between the B1318 and the next junction south from the A1058, the southbound carriageway runs underneath the northbound one to save space, and thus forms the UK’s only double-deck motorway…. interesting trivia, if the subject ever arises in a pub quiz!

Northumberland St

Northumberland St, originally uploaded by teotwawki.

This man has a tiny little camera that came free with a packet of crisps, or something. And he publishes a photo-a-day on a site called l’Espion Daily. This astonishing little offering is his latest.

Life

Life)

Life taken by Alex Marshall.

The Centre for Life is part of a Newcastle’s “science village”. It’s located in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, nearby to the Central Station.

Not only does the centre play host to a education science centre, but it researches into genetics and bioscience.

The complex opened in 2000 and was funded as part of the fourteen UK Millennium landmark projects. It was designed by Terry Farrell, architect and urban designer, who were also responsible for producing masterplans for the Newcastle quayside regeneration. The site offers a unique, stylish and architecturally striking setting.

The centre is also very popular as a conference and banqueting corporate venue.

Within the confines of the circular building is the not so originally named ‘Times Square’. It has a range of bars, typically associated with Newcastle’s gay scene, as it is located within the ‘pink triangle’ which marks the boundaries between gay clubs. In winter periods Times Square also plays host to a temporary ice skating rink.
